Wriddhiman Saha Bids Farewell to First-Class Cricket: A Remarkable Journey Ends

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has officially retired from first-class cricket, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades. Known for his exceptional glovework and dependable batting, Saha was a key figure in both Indian cricket and Bengal’s domestic circuit.

His final match in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, representing Bengal against Punjab, was a fitting farewell as his team secured a convincing innings victory at Eden Gardens. With this, one of the finest wicketkeepers in Indian cricket history has closed the chapter on his first-class career.

From Bengal to International Glory: Saha’s Journey

Saha’s cricketing journey began in 2007 when he made his first-class debut for Bengal. His talent behind the stumps and steady contributions with the bat quickly earned him recognition. By 2010, he had broken into the Indian Test team, though his opportunities were initially limited due to the presence of MS Dhoni.

However, when Dhoni retired from Test cricket in 2014, Saha stepped up as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper. He played 40 Test matches, scoring 1,353 runs at an average of 29.41, with three centuries and six fifties. More than his batting, though, it was his flawless wicketkeeping that made him stand out. His ability to collect spinners effortlessly and his lightning-fast reflexes made him one of the best keepers in the world.

Despite his skills, Saha lost his place in the Indian team following the rise of Rishabh Pant, who was preferred for his aggressive batting. However, Saha remained a force in domestic cricket and the IPL, continuing to perform at a high level.

A Thoughtful Decision to Retire

Before the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, Saha was considering stepping away from cricket. However, after encouragement from his wife, Romi Saha, and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, he decided to play one last season for Bengal.

His final match at Eden Gardens ended in a memorable win for his team. Reflecting on his decision, Saha shared:

"I had thought about retiring earlier, but my family and Sourav da convinced me to play one last time for Bengal. I’m grateful for all the love and respect I’ve received throughout my career."

Wriddhiman Saha’s career was built on hard work, consistency, and an unwavering team-first attitude. Here’s what set him apart:

✅ Reliable Batting – He wasn’t just a keeper; he played crucial knocks when his team needed him.

✅ Calm and Composed – Even under pressure, he never lost focus and always put the team first.

One of the highlights of his career was his 117-run knock against Australia in the 2017 Ranchi Test, a performance that underlined his resilience and skill.

Saha was also a consistent performer in the IPL, playing for franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans. His most unforgettable IPL moment was in 2014, when he smashed a 115 off 55 balls in the final for Punjab*, making him the first player to score a century in an IPL final.
